The New Naim Discrete Regulator;
May 2012

Image
Naim can today announce the completion of a two-year development project to design an improved voltage regulator to be used in its power supplies. The new Naim Discrete Regulator (DR) will be fitted to the HiCap, XPS, SuperCap, 552 PS and 555 PS power supplies as of May 14th 2012. The power supplies fitted with the new Discrete Regulator deliver a significant and repeatedly demonstrable performance increase.

Building on Naim’s upgrade path philosophy

The addition of outboard power supplies offers an established upgrade path for many Naim products. By improving the supplies themselves, removing the electromagnetic field of the transformer and interference generated by the rectifier diodes, and by eliminating transformer vibration from the product case, Naim power supplies offer improved sound quality.

The role of the regulator

Voltage regulators are widely deployed within Naim power supplies to ensure that audio and digital circuits operate with a stable, low noise supply voltage, thereby maximising their performance. Naim’s new discrete regulator betters industry standard monolithic voltage regulators and, even more importantly, has had its design and component selection refined in the listening room to deliver maximised sound quality from Naim’s audio circuits.

A pure development project

As well as incorporating the newly developed DR in these five power supplies, Naim has reviewed and optimised every aspect of their design. Transformer mounting, wire gauge, wire routing, mechanical decoupling, internal layout and reservoir capacitors have all been scrutinised to ensure that the DR’s benefits are fully realised. The result of the inclusion of the new DR regulators and the updates to design is a quite significant increase in performance which helps the listener to really connect with the artist and music.

Updating your product

Existing units can be updated but very few technicians outside of Naim’s Salisbury facility will be able to undertake this. Naim is offering a special reduced price to customers for updates to the new specification for power supplies that were shipped from Naim after 1st February (outside UK) and 1st March (in the UK). These units will be prioritised for updates in the first instance, however from October / November 2012 all existing units will be able to be updated. For more information on pricing and how to get your unit updated please contact your Naim retailer.

Interesantno je da nema nikakve informacije o kakvom designu regulatora se zbilja radi...

E-Onkyo music service becomes first to offer Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio
Image
Looking for something a little more than your average online music store has to offer? Then you may soon want to give Onkyo's somewhat niche e-onkyo service some consideration. It's set to be the first store to offer music in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 -- something that will initially be limited to just 100 albums (heavy on the classical, from the looks of things) and require a compatible Onkyo receiver. Those downloads will also only be available in Japan initially (where they're rolling out on May 30th), but Dolby says they'll be available "elsewhere in the world" sometime this fall. Not surprisingly, that new option will demand a bit of a premium as well, with albums starting at ¥3,000 (or about $35) and singles setting you back ¥400 (or $5).
Press Release:
Dolby Announces World's First Implementation of Dolby TrueHD 5.1 in Online Music Distribution Service
E-onkyo music service to launch 100 titles, 1,000 tracks, starting May 30
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE:DLB) announced today that e-onkyo music, the high-quality music distribution service managed by Onkyo Entertainment Technology Corporation, a subsidiary of Onkyo Corporation, will be the first online music distribution service to feature Dolby® TrueHD 5.1-channel surround sound. Expected to launch on May 30, 2012, in Japan and in fall 2012 elsewhere in the world, this service will enable users to download music from 100 album titles (about 1,000 tracks) in Dolby TrueHD 5.1-channel surround sound. The new Onkyo® A/V receivers (AVR) TX-NR818 and TX-NR717 will support the service. ...

i zaslužuje neko još kvalitetnije pretpojačalo.

OPPO Releases HA-1 Headphone Amplifier

Post by sn » 08 May 2014, 20:09

Oppo, makers of well-reviewed universal players and much more have a new product coming out. The HA-1 headphone amp has an analog audio section with an emphasis on keeping the audio signal in the analog domain once it leaves the DAC. Get it now from OPPO's website.

Uncompromising Audio
built with the latest technology

The analog audio section of the HA-1 is a fully balanced design with an emphasis on keeping the audio signal in the analog domain once it leaves the DAC. The HA-1 is anchored by a hefty toroidal power transformer, and linear power regulators and filters with custom made capacitors ensure that the headphone amplifier has a clean power source with plenty of reserve energy. The fully balanced Class A power amplification section uses hand-picked and paired discrete components to ensure symmetry, and a motor-driven precision volume control knob allows for both manual and remote control volume adjustment while keeping the audio in a pure analog audio path.

Streaming music generated more revenue than CDs in the US for the first time in 2014

Image

While it may be hard to believe for some, considering how long it has been since we were all going out to the store to buy albums, streaming revenue has finally overtaken CD sales. According to data released by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), US streaming revenue hit $1.87 billion last year compared to the $1.85 billion generated in CD sales.

While digital download sales, the recording industry’s biggest earner, fell 8.7% to $2.58 billion, streaming and ad revenue from the likes of iTunes, Spotify, YouTube, Vevo, Pandora, Sirius and others jumped up 29% year-over-year.

It is clear to see that with a 27% jump in total industry revenue share, streaming services in particular are starting to gain steam and that listeners are shifting over to subscription based options over digital/physical copies more and more. Both paid subscriptions and free-add-supported services like YouTube both saw large growth at 25% and 37% respectively. However, while paid subscription services brought in almost $800 million in revenue, the freemium model is still only generating a modest $295 million.

Despite the good news for streaming/ad-supported services and its advocates, music sales as a whole dropped 0.5% in the US to $6.97 billion across 2014.
